The temperature of the products when they arrive also matters when sizing an industrial cold room. Fruit delivered directly from the field places a different demand on the system than goods that arrive already chilled. Door-opening frequency, daily intake and the time required for products to reach the target temperature must also be taken into account.

Main Types of Refrigerated Spaces

Pre-Cooling Room

A pre-cooling room is used to bring down the temperature of products quickly after harvesting, receiving or processing. It is commonly used in agriculture and food production, particularly for fruit, vegetables, meat and other temperature-sensitive goods.

Chilled Storage Room

A chilled storage room keeps products at positive temperatures without freezing them. It can be used for dairy products, beverages, fresh meat, medicines, vegetables or fruit. The operating temperature is selected according to the needs of each product.

Freezer Room

A freezer room is intended for goods that must be stored below zero. For large volumes and continuous use, an industrial freezer room can be designed to operate at temperatures as low as approximately –40°C.

Controlled-Atmosphere Warehouse

A controlled-atmosphere warehouse regulates not only temperature but also humidity and the composition of the air. This solution is used mainly for the long-term storage of fruit and vegetables because it slows ripening and helps preserve product quality.

Multi-Temperature Facilities

Several cold rooms, each operating at a different temperature, can be arranged within the same building. One room may be used for pre-cooling, another for fresh products and a third for frozen goods. This layout is suitable for companies that handle several categories of products.

How Is a Cold Storage Warehouse Built?

1. Assessment of the products and site – the type of goods, required temperature, storage capacity, storage period and working schedule are discussed first. The site, vehicle access and available utilities are also reviewed.
2. Technical design – the building dimensions, internal layout, structure, panel thickness, door type, flooring and equipment positions are established. Cold-room design must also consider the daily volume of incoming products and the required cooling time.
3. Construction and installation – the foundations and steel structure are completed first, followed by the walls, roof, insulated panels and doors. Technical networks, monitoring systems and the equipment specified in the project are then installed.
4. Testing and commissioning – air circulation, temperature and humidity are checked before the facility is used. The refrigeration system is tested under its intended operating conditions, after which the space is prepared for loading.

A straightforward facility may be completed within a few weeks. Where a project includes several zones, different temperature regimes and complex equipment, the work may take several months. The final schedule for a cold storage construction project is confirmed after the technical solution and all equipment have been approved.
